29th Annual Junior Adaptive Sports Camp lunch

The Annual Junior Adaptive Sports Camp (formerly known as the Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp) celebrated its 29th year of encouraging athletes to overcome physical challenges in a competitive and safe environment. The five-day camp is run by the Adaptive Sports & Recreation Association (ASRA), City of San Diego Parks & Recreation Department, and numerous corporate sponsors.

At this unique adaptive sports camp, young athletes with physical challenges who are ages 4-18, are teamed with committed volunteers with a passion for sports. Participants learn the fundamentals of many sports, improve their existing skills, and develop new skills for use in sports and in everyday life.  Junior Adaptive Sports Camp provides the “team experience”, boosting self‐esteem, enhancing self‐confidence, and most importantly, exposing them to various adaptive sports they can continue to play throughout the year.

Our Kiwanis club and SDSU Circle K club members volunteered to serve lunch to the young athletes, their families, and friends on Family Day, the final day of the camp, Saturday, August 15 at Southwestern College in Chula Vista. Under the guidance of event organizer Kim O'Hara and Kiwanians John Peterson and Tony Orosco, volunteers served fruit, chips, drinks and desserts. This year, the very popular Hodad’s restaurant grilled delicious hamburgers, made-to-order. Many vendors presented display booths with specialty items, including the most technologically advanced  wheelchairs, orthotics, exhibits of educational and social opportunities, craft projects, and even face-painting, providing a “street fair” environment for the enjoyment of the young campers.

G.A.G. Kiwanis has been a partner of the Junior Adaptive Sports Camp for more than twenty years. The young athletes are an inspiration to us all, and we are proud to play a part in this great community event.

Kiwanians and SDSU Circle K members had fun and enjoyed helping at the sports camp family day lunch.
