Every Thursday morning, 7:00 a.m., Brothers Family Restaurant

What do we do during our weekly meetings?

Each week, we gather at Brothers Family Restaurant on Waring Road in Allied Gardens to enjoy a delicious breakfast, visit with friends, plan for upcoming events, honor various community members, and enjoy listening to a guest speaker.  Our meetings begin at 7:00 AM and end at 8:30 a.m. exactly, out of consideration for those who must get to work or get on with their busy lives!

Our meeting format is flexible, but it more or less follows this plan:

7:00 - 7:25

Call to order by our president… this year it's George Butterstein.

Patriotic song & Pledge of Allegiance

Invocation  This is a non-denominational, inspirational appeal for guidance and direction.  Members may observe as they see fit.

Introduction of Guests  Community members and first-time visitors are always welcome to join us!  Our meetings are open to the public.

Group singing  Led by our Songmaster Gary Blume, this usually consists of 2 or 3 fun songs. What  we lack in talent, we make up for in enthusiasm!  Our tradition is to always end our singing with "You're a Grand Old Flag," our #1 hit!

Joke of the Week  Our local jokemeister, Dr. Byron Newman, delivers a joke or funny story in memory of former club member Steve Wrischnik, who always kept us laughing!

SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS!  During our meetings, we will often set aside time for special presentations to recognize our club members, local students, and valued members of the community.  Some of these special presentations can include:

  • Student of the Month -- Each month, teachers from Hearst Elementary School and Patrick Henry High School nominate an outstanding student to receive the Jim & Joanne MacDonald* Student of the Month Award.  The student, along with his or her family, teacher, and principal are all invited to attend our meeting.  This give us a chance to learn just how amazing these young people are, and appreciate the impact they have on our community.  We present our winner with a certificate and gift card to Hooley's Public House, owned by Jim and Joanne's son, Craig MacDonald.

* Jim MacDonald was a well-respected member of our organization for 40 years.  The Student of the Month Award was named in his memory, and in memory of his loving wife, Joanne.

  • Member of the Week -- At this time, one member is asked to tell a little bit about him or herself.  It is always interesting to hear about the varied backgrounds and experiences of our members!
  • New Member Inductions or Member Awards -- We are always happy to welcome a new member into our club.  We also believe in recognizing our members for their commitment to the community and to Kiwanis.  Members who have been in Kiwanis for 25 years can be recognized with a Legion of Honor certificate (and are recognized again every five years thereafter!).   This is a big honor!
  • Other awards and special recognitions are performed as needed.

Announcements  We are a busy group and this is when we share information about our upcoming projects and events.  Bring a pen or your smartphone -- you'll want to mark your calendar with all of the fun events and opportunites to volunteer.

7:25 - 7:45  Time to enjoy breakfast with friends!  (Thanks to Brothers Restaurant for hosting us!)

7:45 - 8:00  Our Kiwanian of the Day:
          - collects Happy and Sad Dollars, which gives us all a chance to share the good, the bad, and the funny things going on in our lives.
         - collects Fines & Finks, that offer our members a chance to joke about perceived goofs!
         - quizzes us on trivia, or provides additional entertainment, often relating to our guest speaker’s topic.  Often times, this is the most humorous part of our meeting.

8:00 - 8:25 PROGRAM (guest speaker) -- We always welcome interesting and engaging community members who share their business, educational, social and/or personal experiences with us.  Some memorable guests include first responders, local authors, community leaders, and representatives from non-profit organizations.  If you are interested in becoming a guest speaker at an upcoming Kiwanis meeting, please write to kiwannabee@hotmail.com for more information.

8:29  Final word for the day (we always like to end our meeting on a laugh!).

8:30  Adjournment:  The bell is rung and the meeting is over!

Kiwanis is always a fun way to start your day, and we know you'll be in a good mood!
