Club Meeting - December 14, 2017
Today we welcomed Lewis Principal Brad Callahan who arrived with seventh grader Brian Brumley and eighth grader Enma Peña, two of our three Students of the Month from Lewis Middle School. Our third recipient is sixth grader Emily Allen, who was unable to be with us this morning. Enma’s dad and Brian’s grandmother also joined us in celebrating the students’ success. Brad told us that Brian, Enma and Emily personify the academic and social excellence that he hopes all his students will pursue. They work hard, are respectful and are always willing to help others. Doug Grosmark presented Enma and Brian with a framed award and a gift certificate to Hoolies Restaurant and Brad will be sure to give Emily her’s. We always enjoy honoring exceptional students who will be our leaders of tomorrow!
Our Member of the Week was Norm Townsend. Norm was born in Illinois. He served in the Army for three years and was stationed for a time in Okinawa. He and his wife had five children and were together for thirty six years. After her death, Norm took time to heal and eventually accepted a request by his daughter to join a square dancing group. It was there that he met Ruby, who soon became his wife! They have been happily married since 1991. Norm was an accountant/bookkeeper who worked at the Bank of America and Teledyne-Ryan before moving to SDSU. He retired from there after 20 years of service in 1994. He joined Kiwanis in 1997 and has been a valued member ever since!
Our Kiwanian of the Day was Jim Akin. He collected Happy/Sad Dollars and quizzed us on some holiday trivia. President George Butterstein helped us plan for upcoming events, including the Patrick Henry holiday social which will be on December 15 at 5:00 p.m. in the school's cafetorium. There will be food, festive holiday music and games, good cheer, and an 8:00 movie for those who would like to stick around. We'll even have a fun surprise or two! This is an event for the entire Kiwanis Family, including members of Kiwanis, Circle K, Builders Club, Key Club or just a friend! The more the merrier! We are also looking forward to our Kiwanis holiday party next week. Members plan to bring welcome bags that will be given to families who find themselves staying in the Ronald McDonald House while their child is being treated at Rady Children’s Hospital. This brings us closer to the real meaning of the holiday season!
