New Officer Installation 2017

One of our favorite Kiwanis events is the Installation Banquet where we induct a new slate of officers and board members for the upcoming year. This fun event was held September 23 at the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation. It was catered by Kitchens for Good, a non-profit organization that offers innovative programs in workforce training, healthy food production, and social enterprise. We enjoyed the beautiful venue and an outstanding meal provided by their talented staff. A majority of our Kiwanis family were present including students from Patrick Henry High School Key Club and SDSU Circle K. Outgoing Lieutenant Governor Lonnie Folsom and his wife, our incoming Lieutenant Governor Doug Beckham and past Lieutenant Governor Cloti Simpelo joined us to help retire our past officers and install our new leaders for the upcoming 2017-2018 year. Our MC was Valerie Crawford who did a great job running the show with efficiency and grace.

Membership chair John Crawford had the pleasure of inducting three new members into our club. Chris and Gay Holbrook are the new owners/operators of the Grocery Outlet in Allied Gardens and were sponsored by George and Kathy Butterstein. Marianne Lindsay has a tax planning and preparation business and was sponsored by John Crawford. They were all warmly welcomed by everyone and will help us have an even greater impact in our community!

The highlight of our banquet is always the presentation of the Kiwanian of the Year Award. Our members vote for the person they believe epitomizes the ideals of Kiwanis and has done the most to further the goals of our organization. This year, we have renamed this prize The John Peterson Kiwanian of the Year Award as a tribute to the service and dedication exemplified by John Peterson during his 51years of service to our club and the community. So it is very fitting that the first to receive this recognition is John Crawford. John is an outstanding member who possesses the same level of commitment and devotion to his community as does John Pete! When last year’s winners, Pam & John Chandler, announced John as the winner, the applause was loud and enthusiastic! John works tirelessly with our sponsored youth groups, produces our award-winning monthly news letter and is a vey successful chair of the Membership Committee. He is the go-to person for all things Kiwanis! This is the second time John has received this honor and it will probably not be the last!

We are proud of our slate of new officers that were installed by Lieutenant Governor Doug Beckham. They are George Butterstein (president), Kathy Butterstein (president-elect), John Crawford (vice-president), John Chandler (treasurer), Mickey Zeichick (Secretary) and Kathy Wiskur (immediate past president).

Kathy Wiskur gave thanks to several of her committee chairs and supporting officers who helped make her tenure as president such a great success. She presented Mary Markson with a Founders Award that is presented to a new member who immediately steps in and actively participates in club events. John Chandler received the Fundraising Champion Award for all his efforts this year coordinating and participating in our many cookouts and work projects.

Our new president, George Butterstein, delivered an inaugural address which was both humorous and motivational. He offered up some “executive orders” changing our meeting time from 7 AM to 10 AM, and declaring that monthly board meetings will be reduced to three a year…if necessary! This garnered a lot of laughs and some murmurs that we wished this could really happen!

As the evening wound down, everyone felt encouraged and satisfied that the fun and successful year we just completed under the leadership of Kathy Wiskur will be followed by yet another great year, thanks to the commitment and dedication of all our members!
