Club Meeting – October 26, 2017
Club Vice President John Crawford called the meeting to order, introducing our guests from Pacific Beach Kiwanis Club. In attendance today were Jim Moore, Joan Robinson, Ann Rosser, Atta Erikat, Steve Peterson, and Barry Bonjers, who were here to fulfill their interclub goal, and to invite us to their annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser tonight at Pernicanos restaurant in Pacific Beach. Also visiting from SDSU Circle K were Paradise Division Lieutenant Governor G-Bus Aguilar and CK club secretary Jack Miao.
Gary Blume got everyone in the Halloween spirit by leading us in some of our favorite spooky songs: The Addams Family, Bad Moon Rising, and Monster Mash. We ended the song-fest with You’re a Grand Old Flag.
Annoucements included Doug Grosmark’s request for leftover Halloween candy for the Hearst K-Kids collection for the US Marines. The kids will also be collecting coins for UNICEF. This Saturday night, October 28, will be the Circle K installation of new members at Mission Trails Church.
Our Kiwanian of the Day was Doug Grosmark, who quizzed our group about the subject of our guest speaker’s presentation – Taxes. We learned which states do not require income tax, how many pages are in the tax code, and other facts that we should know about taxes. Doug also collected happy/sad dollars from those who wanted to share a bit of information about themselves, and then he introduced our guest speaker.
Today we were honored with a return visit of Dan McAllister, San Diego County Treasurer and Tax Collector. Dan is an elected official, is a native son, and attended Mission Bay High School where he was a Key Club member. His graduate degree from SDSU and his local family make him very connected to San Diego County and his community. He spoke to us about current employment rates, the impact of supply and demand in the housing industry, the effects of Proposition 13, home prices, school bonds and other bond issues, population demographics in the County, and more. He is a source of up-to-date information about taxes and we thank Mr. McAllister for sharing his time with his constituents.
