NEW OFFICER INSTALLATION
G.A.G. Kiwanis Breaks on Through to a Groovy New Age – 9/24/16
Going back to the 1960s for a night, G.A.G. Kiwanis members put on their best tie-dye duds and headbands for a memorable installation dinner. With peace and love in the air, plus some of the biggest musical hits of the Woodstock era, new club President Kathy Wiskur took her place at the podium to usher in a new age for G.A.G. Kiwanis.
With the room decked out in Grateful Dead memorabilia, and rubber ducks dressed like hippies, the intersection of Jackson and Navajo could have been mistaken for the corner of Haight and Ashbury.
Mickey Zeichick earned praise for her efforts to organize the “super cool and groovy” event, with Gary Blume (or was it Jerry Garcia?) serving as an entertaining emcee. Mickey managed all of the arrangements with Bekker’s Catering, as well as the local Elks Lodge, the venue for the banquet.
Also joining us for the night was the Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge #168, Michael Bradshaw, who kindly allowed Gary the temporary use of his throne during the ceremony. (The Elks Lodge is a frequent supporter of the PHHS Key Club, which conducts fundraising events regularly by busing tables and washing dishes for the Elks members.)
Division 21 Lieutenant Governor Elect Lonnie Folsom of the Tierrasanta Kiwanis Club did double duty to retire the old board members and to install the new ones. Alex Zubak, after being uninstalled, took a few minutes to thank many of the members and officers who helped make his experience as President a positive one. When Alex was finished with his appreciative comments, he turned over the meeting to Kathy Wiskur, last year’s reigning Kiwanian of the Year recipient. Kathy had the pleasure of presenting this year’s award to two people: John and Pam Chandler. This marks the first time in club history that the award is shared between two people.
Three guests from PHHS Key Club, and seven from the SDSU Circle K club, also enjoyed the show. Several of our members brought their spouses or significant others along, including newlyweds Alex and Julie Zubak. Keven Tostado and his wife, Francys Scott, will certainly remember their experience at the Kiwanis banquet, since they became parents less than 24 hours later.
A moment of silence was held in memory of longtime G.A.G. Kiwanis member and past President Jim MacDonald.
