May 4th – Presenting Our 2017 Scholarship Winners

Scholarship day is one of our most rewarding meetings of the year – literally!  Our meeting today was all about our Circle K volunteers at SDSU, including a very deserving group of four students, who received their awards from our Kiwanis Foundation.  (Another four scholarship awards, designated for our Key Club seniors at Patrick Henry High School, will be presented at a later day.)

We welcomed back our newest member, Alan Young, as he returned from an exciting cruise through the Panama Canal!  We also welcomed Hearst Elementary School 5th grader Andrew Handler, our Student of the Month Award winner for May!  Joining Andrew for his big award were his mother, Jennifer, father Robert, and grandfather (Robert Sr.)  Hearst Principal Jamie Jorgensen, who has known the Handler family for eleven years, says the entire family sets a good example for the Hearst community.  Andrew’s older siblings, Alexis and Charles, have also been honored by G.A.G. Kiwanis as Hearst Student of the Month award winners.  Even Andrew’s dad is a graduate from Hearst!

As for Andrew, “you can’t ask for a better student,” said the principal.  “He just loves learning.”  His teacher, Dorothy Ianuzzi, is impressed with Andrew’s social conscience.  “He’s always thinking of others.”  In his spare time, Andrew enjoys swimming and playing the piano.  Although Andrew will soon be leaving Hearst and moving on to middle school, the entire family is grateful for the positive experience they had at Hearst.  “Jamie is the best principal in San Diego,” said Jennifer Handler.  “We’re really going to miss her.”

Speaking of Hearst, Kiwanis member Gary Blume reminded us that we will be cooking for the school’s annual overnight campout next week.  We also look forward to the Miracle Mile of Quarters to benefit Rady Children’s Hospital, and the Passport to Life at City College.

Dr. Byron Newman notified us of the recent passing (March 21st) of 95-year-old Nellie Amondson, who served for many years in both the Kearny Mesa and Clairemont Hills Kiwanis Clubs.  Nellie was a fascinating woman who spoke to our club on several occasions, most notably about her experiences as a pilot and spy during World War II!  We will miss Nellie, who led a most interesting and remarkable life!

Our Kiwanian of the Day, Tony Haas, paid tribute to our scholarship winners at SDSU by asking us trivia questions about the university.  Tony describes himself as an expert on SDSU, since he worked on campus “for 72 semesters!”  Many members of our club are SDSU graduates, so we knew a lot of the common trivia, but Tony stumped us a couple of times.  Not many of us knew that SDSU has an observatory atop Mount Laguna, or a 4,000 acre environmental preserve near Temecula.  We are proud of our SDSU Aztecs!

In lieu of a guest speaker today, we took turns recognizing the four outstanding college students who were selected by the G.A.G. Kiwanis Scholarship Committee.  Imani Baldi, Victor Campos, Jayme de la Cruz, and Hershey Guzman each received financial aid for the upcoming academic year, in recognition of their commitment to community service and the Kiwanis Family.

Scholarship Committee Chair Gary Blume spoke for a short time about the process of selecting scholarship winners from the applications received, and also about some minor changes that are in the works for the evaluation process next year.  He then proceeded to introduce Victor, our first scholarship winner of the day.  Kiwanis Treasurer John Chandler presented the award to Imani, followed by club President Kathy Wiskur, who serves as the advisor to the SDSU Circle K club.  President Kathy presented scholarships to Jayme and Hershey.  See Page 1 of this newsletter for more detailed coverage of our scholarship presentations!
