Club Meeting - October 12, 2017

Plans were underway this morning for fall events at Excelsior and Marvin Elementary Schools. SDSU Circle K president Hershey announced their new member Installation banquet will be a week from Saturday and we are all invited. John Crawford invited us to attend the Key Club Regional Training Conference this Saturday at Cal State San Marcos. Doug Grosmark reminded us all to save our extra Halloween treats. K-Kids Club willl be bagging left-over candy to distribute to our troops. This is always a busy time as all our sponsored clubs begin their new year.

Our new president, George Butterstein, began a new addition to our program. Each week we will ask one of our members to take a few minutes to give a brief autobiography so that we will all get to establish stronger relationships. Our inaugural member was Byron Newman. Byron was born 88 years ago in Lorain, Ohio and was raised in Warren, Ohio. After eleventh grade, Byron joined the Army and was stationed in Seoul, South Korea, where he worked on the Army newspaper. When his service ended, Byron attended college and became an optometrist. For 60 years Byron helped his patients improve their vision, giving Byron a great sense of satisfaction. In retirement he enjoys being a grandfather of five and a great grandfather of nine children. On weekends we can find Bryon greeting customers at our local Grocery Outlet and serving them coffee and treats. We are proud to have Byron as a member of our club and our community!

Our KOD was Kathy Butterstein. She collected Happy/Sad Dollars which gives us an opportunity to share the good and the bad events that are going on in our lives. She also quizzed us on events in our president’s life to give us a better understanding of just who our new leader is! From barbecuing on a deck piled high with snow in NY, to collecting alligator blood down on the bayous of Louisiana, George has had an interesting life!

Our speaker this morning was Tom Clements. Tom is a volunteer for Coffee 4 Kids Honduras.
Founded in 2006, Coffee 4 Kids Honduras raises funds to provide children and families in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, with the basic necessities needed for survival: God’s love in the form of food, medicine, medical supplies, and other urgently needed items. A bulk of the work they do is behind-the-scenes and around the clock, raising needed capital through donations and fundraising, with Honduran coffee being both a namesake and major fundraising product. Members of Tom’s organization travel to Honduras three times a year to distribute medicine and medical supplies to San Pedro Sula’s largest public hospital, Mario Rivas, and work with local churches, rotary clubs, and nonprofit organizations on various projects that will improve the health and quality of life for the city’s poorest of the poor. Tom explained how desperate the conditions were when they first began their mission. Many people have no electricity and no fresh water. As a result, many children die from treatable ailments like diarrhea and vomiting which lead to dehydration. Tom’s teams bring much needed medical supplies, blankets and clothes to a place that is in dire need. In addition to donations, high quality El Dorao coffee, the same used by Stumptown and Verve Coffee Roasters, is sold to raise funds for Coffee 4 Kids. Tom’s organization is always looking for volunteers to work here in the US making and gathering donations as well as folks who wish to join him on one of the week-long missions to Honduras. After seeing the photos of past missions, we believe Tom when he says that his first mission was a life-changing event in his life. We applaud him for his dedication and commitment to this important cause.
